Comets Sports Club is more than just a football team — it’s a story of friendship, passion, and perseverance that began in 1998 on the island of N. Kendhikulhudhoo.
It all started with four childhood friends — Bushree, Majid, Thausheef, and Shaan — who formed a group they first called “Dhunthari.” But when they discovered that the name was already being used by another group in the Maldives, they searched for a new identity. In that process, they stumbled upon the English translation of the word: “Comets.” It was a name that reflected speed, brilliance, and ambition — and it stuck.
One by one, youth from the neighborhood joined the group, and by the early 2000s, Comets had grown into a team. They entered their first football tournament with excitement — only to be beaten 19-0. It was a humbling start, but one that only fueled their determination.
Training was held at their own handmade field, “Vaadhuh Magu,” a cleared area near the beach filled with tree roots and rough ground. Goals were made of sticks. Most players couldn’t afford boots, but their love for the game and raw talent shone through. Through sweat, sacrifice, and countless hours of barefoot practice, these teens began to evolve into true footballers.
Their hard work paid off in 2007 when Comets won their first title — the Kayd Cup in N. Kudafari. It marked the beginning of a winning era. Since then, Comets Sports Club has become the most successful football team in Kendhikulhudhoo, winning a record 14 tournament titles.
In 2019, Comets was officially registered as a sports club with the Ministry of Youth. Since formalizing their status, they have expanded their mission — engaging in NGO projects, promoting youth development, and continuing their success in sports.
From a rough patch of beach to the top of local football, Comets’ journey is a shining example of community spirit and dedication. And as the name suggests, Comets will always keep moving forward — fast, bright, and unstoppable.
